Recession over as hotel has bumper bank holiday

A leading Lewes hotel is celebrating after welcoming more than 1,000 people through its doors over its busiest Bank Holiday weekend ever.

The historic 16th century Pelham House Hotel is looking forward to a bumper summer after experiencing a surge in bookings as more and more people decide to stay in Britain for short-breaks and holidays.

Business Development Manager Abi Stevenson said: “We had a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend with an unprecedented number of guests.

“Flying abroad is becoming increasingly difficult what with disruptions caused by industrial disputes and the Icelandic volcano and people are rediscovering how beautiful England is.

Lewes is a very attractive town with lots of amenities and is close to Brighton and the Downs so it makes an ideal escape destination which is great news for the town’s businesses and for the local economy in general.”

Pelham House which has 31 boutique style bedrooms is famous for its art exhibitions and varied collection of sculptures and paintings, as well as its stunning gardens and views over the Sussex Downs. Over the bank holiday weekend, nearly 600 diners ate in the hotel’s elegant restaurant, with 129 guests booking in to overnight accommodation, and almost 300 people attending events including two hotel weddings and a silver wedding anniversary.

The hotel is also renowned for its conference and meeting facilities. Mrs Stevenson added: “Like all businesses Pelham House was affected by the recession, but we are now experiencing a huge upturn in business which is very exciting.”
